COST OF LIVING
A WOMEN'S SELF-DENYING ORDINANCE. By Telegraph-Press .Association. Auckland, May 10. A meeting of women, convened by the Civic League and tha Civic Circle o'f the Women's Club, was held to-night to consider the cost of living. The meeting carried a declaration of protest against the ! continued high cost of the necessaries of lifo, particularly drapery and clothing generally, and in furtherance of the protest undertook not to buy the following articles for a period of eix months:—Crop© de chine and georgette underclothing irrespective of price, gloves irrespective of price, stockings cost more than Bs. Cd. a pair, costumes costing more than 10 guineas, hats costing more than £% 10s., blouses costing more than ,£2, and boots ajid shoes costing more than £1 ss. a pair. It was. resolved to request the managers of the Technical College to establish classes in boot recanting. Further resolutions urged that "two women be appointed to the Board of Trado forthwith; that the names of those found guilty by the Board of Trado anti-profitetTing tribunals be published and the offenders) punished; also that the Government take steps to secure for the public sunplies of woollen goods at a reasonable price, so reducing the enormous difference between the price paid to farmers for wool and the prise of manufactured goods. The undertaking not to purchase* goods was signed by about six<y women in a few minutes.
