Union Steam Ship Company's staff since 1903, has retired, and Mr. James Smith, late J superintending engineer for the company j at Sydney, has been appointed to fill Mr. Smart's position. Captain A, Baton, of the Naval Department of Melbourne, arrived by the Manuka last evening. Captain Eaton has coma across on business in connection with the visit of H.M.S. Eenown ' to Australia. Mr. : Paviour Smith, of Dannevirke, is visiting AVellington. Mr. Noel S. Johnson was yesterday admited a barrister of the Supreme Court by His Honour Mr. Justice Cooper, on the motion of Mr. T. Young. Councillor William Galloway, who died at his residence "Eawiri," Pahautanui, on April 28, had been suffering from hoart troublo for a number of years, but his death came unexpectedly to hig relatives and friends. The late Mr. Galloway took a keen interest in local affairs, being a member of the Hutt County Counoil for fifteen years, a member of tho Charitable Aid Board for n. number of years, and during the war chairman of the local Patriotic Society. His wife and son predeceased him during the epidemic, and his brother only four weeks ago. Mr. Galloway had a large circle of friends and relatives, and was held in high esteem in the district where he had so long resided. The funeral was largely attended, the service being conducted by the Rev. C. H. Isaacson. Deceased leaves'a grown-up family of nine, two of whom are single, a son and daughter. Mr. W. Mitchell, who haß been staying in Wellington for a few days, returned to Pahiatua yesterday. Mr. Prank H. Tuckey, who has retired from the Pensions Department after forty-two years' service, was yesterday presented.' with two travelling bags and a set of pipes. Colonel J. J. Bsson, Acting-Secretary to the Treasury, who made the presentation, referred to Mr. Tuckey's many good qualities, evidenced over a great number of years, not only towards his colleagues but t)ie publie with whom he had carried, out so many highly arduous and responsible transactions.. On'behalf of the 6taff. Colonel Esson expressed the hope that Mr. Tuckey would enjoy many years cf wellearned leisure. In the course of his reply, Mr. Tuckey said he took the view that "after forty years' service it is up to all of us to pass ourselves out, and give the younger men a chance. ... We must always remembor that age should not 1m selfish, but, on the other band, should be mindful of youth." Therefore, he thought he was doing tho right thing in retiring, but he would never forget tho many kindnesses and the hearty cooperation which it had been his good fortune to experience at their hands. Mr. H. J. Mackio has been appointed assistant-master at the Normal Training College, states the Chri6tclvurch "Sun."
