SPORTS AT PETONE
From eleven o'clock yesterday until the arrival of tho Prince of Wales on rlie Petono beach a programme of athletic events (including races for the children) , anil a rowing regatta interested 'the Viil>Hc. The regatta was rowed under ideal conditions, the water being as smooth as a pond, and the course waS ; from the wharf to a buoy in front of the stadium, a distance of about half a mile. Only two clubs—Petono and 1 Star -participated, Wt the racing was'quito good, although the course could not al- „■ ways be kept clear of small craft. Four events were arranged, of which Star v.-qh one and Petone tho remainder. - Some of the athletic events attracted competitors, but a good number had to be ' cancelled for want of entries, though / < good trophies were offered; ''None of tho races for yachts or motor-boats was sailed.
