HOTEL EMPLOYEES
DOUBLE PAY DEMAND RESCINDED. Last week the Wellington Hotel and Restaurant Employees' . Union decided that, failing an agreement on the part of tho employers to grant- double pay for the two days during which the Prince of Wales is in Wellington, the hotel workers should take two days' holiday. An intimation to this effect was conveyed to the Licensed Victuallers' Association, which replied that all licensees had been advised to grant reasonable time off to all employees, or remuneration for any extra work which might he entailed ,ind could not be avoided during the period of the Prince's visit.
A Dominion reporter was informed yesterday that tho principal tearooms and restaurants in the city had agreed to pay double wages by way of compensation for the extra work their employee* would have to perform while tho city io crowded with visitors. Tho union had received advice, however, that the resolution passed at last week's meeting waa. contrary to the provisions of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, as its terms were tantamount to a threat of a strike if the demand for extra wages was not conceded. Consequently, in view of the communication from the Licensed Victuallers' Association, and tho advice received regarding the legal position, tho union, at a meeting held on Sunday, had docided to rescind tho resolution.
