Tho Conciliation Council has been engaged for the past two days with disputes filed by tho Clerks' Union, tho other parties being the gas companies and implement manufacturers. The union asked for a 38 hours' week, and the following rates of wages First year, 255.; second, 325. Gc(.; third, -J5;.,- fourth, 625. fid.; fifth, 855.; seniors (after five years' sei'vicc), 110s.; cashiers. 110?.; shipping and Customs clerks, 1.'105.; collectors, 150s. No headway was made, tho employers feeling that it would be useless to discuss the dispute until it had been decided by the. Arbitration Court whether an award could 'be made to cover the class of workers affected.
