By Telesrapli—Sneciftl Corresiiondont. Masterton, April 26. Tho soaring price of petrol, and the ever-increasing demands for its use oil farms', has led the Wairarapa Branch of the Fanners' Union to adopt the following remit to bo submitted to the • forthcoming .Farmers' Union Provincial Conference That this conferen;o wishes to urge on the Government tho desirability of obtaining the best independent expert advico as to the locality in which to bore for petrol, and considers it advisable to put down some purely prospective bores similar to the Queensland water bores to a depth of five or six thousand feet, thus further testing tho important question in a more economical ivay than hitherto.' The significance of the a'bovo remit is further emphasised by the ■ following explanatory statement which is attached:—lf the theory i/true that these islands are the higher altitudes of a suftken continent, such deposits are likely to be founjl at a greator depth than usual j the Tnranaki supply having been broken, and partly liberated by tho volcanic disturbances of Mount Egmont, it i 9 prolwblo that inlandi in an area between Eketahuna an<l ( a point on tho East Coast, near Castlepoint, largo payable deposits may be found sealed up by the papa strata at considerable depths.. The methods hitherto adopted by private companies—putting down expensive heavy working bores and making arrangements with landowners, etc.—have not proved satisfactory. ; V
