WAIRARAPA NOTES

- 4 At next meeting of Masterton Borough Couucil a petition is to he presented urging that the necessary land be acquired Slid a .street formed between Queen and Cliapel Streets, at a point nearly.opposite the Fire Station. A poll, wus taken recently on the proposal, which was rejected. The promoters now proposed to assist the council "% a, •cash contribution of ,£2500 subscribed'by the business people, who will benefit by the new street. Promises amounting to ,£2150 have' already been obtained, and it is expected that the difference will be made -up in the course of a few days, thus leaving tho council only about £3000 to* find for the work. It is pointed out that the new street would greatly facilitate the work of the Fire Brigade, when called to fires in the western part of the town. Last year tlje sum 0fi'3243 10s. Sd. Was_ paid in epidemic pensions by the Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board.' During the same period, JJS2G 17s. Bd. was expended on the Solway Old Peoples' Home. So far this year the only arrests for drunkenness in Masterton have been ot men coming from.outside districts, and they have been few in number. It is suggested by the Mayor (Mr. AV. H. Jackson) that should*the proposed' new street, bo put through between Queen Mid Chapel Streets, Masterton, it shall be called Prince Street in commemoration of the visit of the Princo of Wales to the town.
