A PALMERSTON TRAGEDY
SHUNTER'S GRUESOME
DISCOVERY
By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent. Palmorston North, April 11. A terrible accident happened in the yard of the Palmorston North Railway Station last evening. Soon after 7 o'clock, a shunter, who was working in the yard,, was horrified to find a portion of a human body adhering to the engine. Further search revealed the fact.that a man had been cut to pieces. Tho accident evidently occurred on a shunting lino between tho Square and the railway station, a:> portions of the body were found there. ~ ~„ , ~ , The body has Tieen identified as that of J. D. Robertson, a man about 115 years of age, who had been staying at the Railway Hotel since Thursday. A fellowlodger ' last saw him about 5.30 p.m., when he was walking np the main street beside the line. _ .. ~-.... From clothing found in the hotel, it is evident that the deceased came from Singapore, as the underclothing and collars are marked "Whiteaway and Laidlaw, Singapore." In his trunks were found letters of introduction from people in Singapore to persons in Hobart, and it is surmised that ho had merely called at New Zealand . on. the way to Tas- \ mania. , An inquest will lie opened to-morrow.
