« : HOLD-UP AT AVONDAIE .MEETING. By Telczranh—Press .Association. Auckland, April 10. After the running of the fifth race at the Avondale Jockey Club's Meeting today, and after the jockeys had been weighed out and their names hoisted for the Waitikeri Handicap, there was a "strike" of horsemen, and apprentices had to bo requisitioned. The action of the jockeys in declining to ride was over an inquiry instituted in regard to a movement made 1 by L. H. Hewitt on the opening day to bring about a holdup when the weather was very bad. The inquiry had been adjourned, when the jockeys took action, and they sought to obtain a guarantee that Hewitt would not be disqualified. The stewards stated that the inquiry had been adjourned, hut the jockeys would not go on without the guarantee. As a result of the strike the proceedings were delayed for over an hour, and the last race was run in the dusk. April 11. The stewards of the Avondalo Jockey Clubsat for two hours last evening considering the position in regard to tho strike of jockeys at yesterday's races. The matter was then adjourned for further consideration.
