« The Secretary of the General Post Offlr.o has received tho following telegraui from tho postmaster nt Cheviot: An cxtensivo iiro occurred hero at 2 o'clock on Saturday morning, and « block of buildings, comprising au empty dwelling-house, the offices of Dalgety and Co., ft sliop occupied by Wcathordan, and tho Town Hall, were completely destroyed. According to a Press Association telegram from Christehurch the Town Hall and Weatherdan's store wcro insured in tho Sun office for .£675. This covered the contents of the Town Hall. Messrs. Dalgety and Co.'b premises were insured in the Victoria for .£875 and the contents for £1155 iu the same office.
