UNUSED TRAVELLING PERMITS
» MUST BE RETURNED. A peculiar case came before Mr. PL. Rollings, 5.M.., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, A man named; John L. M'Phee was charged with failing to return to the Minister of Internal Affairs a permit authorising him to leave New Zealand for Vancouver. Sub-Inspector Emerson stated that the accused was granted a permit to leave by the s.s. Makura for Cauada on November f8 last. Accused did not go by the vessel, but -his brother, who is a married man, did. thus deserting his wife und children. When the accused was questioned by the police he said that lie had the permit in his box, but a seaTcli of this failed to find the document, and it was not produced. According to the War Regulations of October 1, 1.917. it was an offence for anybody who failed to make use of a permit not' to return it to the Department within a month. The accused hail been apparently unable to return the permit because, presumably, it had been given to -his brother. The accused pleaded guilty to failin? to return the permit, but produced the document from his pocket-book. He I said 'that he found tlie permit in his I bag. • He denied having received it In post frflm his brother. Hp declared that he had not heard from his brother, and did not know where his brother wad at present. I'or failing to return the unused permit lie was fined .£T>, with the option of one month's imprisonment.
