EXPORT OF BUTTER
QUESTION OP RALE TO BRITISH GOVERNMENT. •
The announcement Hint the British Government has offered to purchase the Australian exportable surplus of butter will be read with interest hv the New 7/ealnnd producers. • The official iepresentalives of the nroducers of butter, and cheese in New Zealand informed the Government here some time ego tlint tliey did not. desire again to enter into any contract for the sale of their produce but tlint tliev desired to have a free market ■ for it. This being: the ease the New Zealand Government is in the posilion merely of n medium of communication lietwpnnMhe British Government and the producers here. A certain telegram dealing with .butter wa3 received by the Prime . Minister lately, nwl bv him sent on to the'flutter Committed It is quite probable that the British Government ha 1 : made some offer for tlij purchase of New Zealand butter.. or nt least for the oiieriinj of ncgolintions to this end. If so the producers may lie called together in conference -to consider the offer, but this mav not even be necessary, if the producers are quite fix»d in their rc-solve to have n frpe market in future. In 'riml case the n&xt announcement, regardiin? the sale of our butter will have to come from the producers, although the communication may go first to Mr. Massey. ' v ■
