CHESS NOTES

4 The chess rally that was to have been held ut Masterton during the Easter holidays has been abandoned owing to lack of support. Threo Wellington clubs wore prepared to tako part, but teams were not forthcoming from Wanganui and l'almerston North, an<l there was a marked lukewarmncss in the Wainirapa itself. Feeling. that the adverse tide was too strong for him to stem, the Masterton lion, secretary, Mr. Clemas, relucantly Abandoned tlie idea of holding a 'Tally" this year. The" Wellington Working Men's Club's chess team, is proceeding to l'ainierston North on Good Friday to play a tworound match against the local club during the coming holidays. The Auckland Chess Club has suggested May 1 and 8 as the' dates _ for its proposed telegraphic match against tho Masterton Chess Club. Tho tourney to decide the Ngaio Chess Club's championship for 1920 is rapidly approaching completion. The issue, which T? narrowed down to G .A. Jones and F. J Brooker, depends on threo outstanding games, viz., Jones v. Topp, Jones v. Lindsay, and Brooker v. James. Messrs. Purchas, G. P. Anderson, and S. Fuulknor, are the favourites for tho South Wellington Club's championship—, the tourney to decide which has dragged somewhat (luring the past month.
