ALLEGED ADULTERATED lODINE
CASE AGAINST PETONE- CHEMIST PAILS. At. the. Petone Magistrate's Court yesterday morning,' before Mr. E. Page, S.M.. Robert Angus Burrows, chemist, .Tackson Street. Petone, was oharged with having, on November 22, sold adulterated iodine without informing the purchaser of the adulteration.
. John Serwell (inspector under the Pood and Drugs Department) prosecuted, and gave evidence as to the of 6oz. of iodine on the date mentioned. Mr. Burrows said to hiiii, after he had told him the purchase was for purposes of analvsis. that it was between a liquid and a tincture—between' strong and weak, and that it 'was used mostly for naintine. He did not know that there were two tinctures-.
Eoh'ert Leslie Andrew, analyst, submitted his certificate, which showed that 'the tincture examined did not comply with the standard for strong or weak tincture, as. specified by the last edition of the' "British Pharmacopoeia." 'The sample, therofore, did not, it "was eontended, comply with regulation 50, (1) liavt of the regulations under the Food and Dnurs Act. 1008. Ho admitted that the iodino contained no foreign substance, and was possibly n mixture of strong and ivealc. which would be allowable in specified cases. Mr, Collins, for defendant, asked for a nonsuit, on the grounds of the fact that there was no evidence of adulteration, and submitted that there was no evidence lhat tincture was asked for. lodino was al6o obtainable in a crvstal.
ilis Worship said he would hot convict. The inspector should havo asked for either the strong or the weak tincture, so that the chemist could know what wan f>ctuallv wanted, and if tho sample did not come up'to requirements then he ;:ould be prosecuted. The inspector had onlv asked for iodino. In connection with the nuestion of adulteration, the seller had stated that the iodine was between a strong and a weak sample, and that was notice of adulteration. The caso was therefore dismissed. -
