TRAMWAY LOAN POLL
PALMEESTON PROPOSAL DE-

A poll of ratepayers was taken hero to-day on a proposal to 'raise a further sum of ,£112,000 for the puruose of providing a tramway service. It was lost by 117 votes, 814 voting for and 727 against the proposal. Some time ago the ratepayers sanctioned a loan of _£fl>,ooo for trams and ,£20,000 for providing electric light. At a subsequent poll the tramway proposal was defeated, and now that it has been again turned down the borough is in the peculiar position of having £60,000 in hand for trams which cannot be used for anyother purpose.
