MURDER OF LORD MAYOR OF CORK
.ME. O'CONNOR'S QUESTION, ffiec. March 25, 0.15 a.m;) London, March 23. In the House of Commons, Mr. T. P. O'Connor., adverting to his statement reflwtimr upon soldiers searching the Lord Mayor's houso in Cork, said Mr. Macpherson's subsequent explanation disposed of his remarks. The explanation, moreover, did the officer concerned great credit—lmperial News Service.
ttlr. T. P. O'Connor asked if shortly after the Lord Mayor of Cork had been murdered a. number of soldiers visited the residence and insisted on examining the whole of the premises, in spite of the bereavement and of protests. He inquired if it was in order to destroy evidence. Mr. Macphcrson (Chief Secretary for Ireland) replied reflecting his general resentment at the latter part of the question. It was a monstrous suggestion, lie said, to condemn soldiers who wore merely acting under orders. He added: "If the authorities had not entered the. sccno tho accusation would have been made that the British Government bad' not attempted to detect tho murderer because the deceased was a Sinn Eeiner. A thorough search was made in order to discover evidence likely to.trnce the murderers."] © __
