FARMERS ADVISED TO GROW AS ' MUCH AS .POSSIBLE. By Telegraph-Press Association.

Christchurch, March 24. In opening a meeting of the Canterbury Bir.nch of the Farmers' Union to-day, the chairman (Mr. D. Jones, M.P.) said lie thought the Government had met tho farmers in a. very fair manner indeed in regard to tile price of wheat. They hod been given a guaranteed .minimum price, and they conld get more it, outside markets justified higher prices; "I hope," said Mr. .Tones, "the farmers of Canterbury and of New' Zealand will do what is necessary to ensure, if possible during next Benson, sufficient wheat being grown. I believe there is a feeling in. the minds of farmers to-day that in the offer that has been made by tho Government we have been treated' very fa : rly, aifd that they are prepared to grow all tho wheat they can cu the wheat-growing land. At a period liko this, when freights by sea .ara so difficult to secure, we should do our utmost in endeavouring to grow sufficient wheat for next season's .requirements." Mr. Jones added that ho believed some dissatisfaction had existed among farmers in regard to this season's wheat prices, but a committee which had gone into the matter bad' reported favourably concerning tho Government's offer.
