SO-CALLED ALIEN INTERNEES
Sir,—There can be no doubt that o ! considerable number of naturalised Brit- j isli subjects of so-colled alien origin were ; both interned.and-denaturalised merely ! on suspicion \of being 'disloyal to our j country and its cause.. Some of them i had been naturalised British subjects for ■ j thirty W more years. They were invited by New Zealand's Government to come | to this -country and assured" an absolutely square and Brit : sh deal when in- ) •vitcd -to settle here Now several such ] have (to my own knowledge) been in- • terned and denaturalised, and no definite > ohargo whatever has been •preferred, against thorn'. Now, surely we, as lion- j ourable men, as square-dealing Britons, | and as champions of Christian ethics, j are going to afford .such internees tins i fullest opportunity of establishing their innocenco. If not, the days of nationnl <■ honour and chivalry are at an end. j Somo of tlioso denaturalised internees j have appealed to Ministers of tho Crown ; to havo their case submitted to a Su- ; premo Court tribunal, so that they might j liave an opportunity of rehabilitating j themselves in tho public eye and estimation, and their request has'been mi- I ceremoniouslv refused. This reasonable ; claim and right have been (I understand) j conceded in Australia. WhychouUl they be denied in New Zealand ?-I am, etc., { A BRITON ON THE SQTJABE.. I March 20. . , , .. j
