SHIPOWNERS' SURPLUS' WOOL FUND

Sir.r-Mv attention Las beetl drawn ; lo tin article which appeared in a Tecent 1 issue of your paper, when it was suggested that a portion of 'this fund should he devoted to a-scheme by which it is pronnsed to establish a sailors' home, or what lias been described as "Tack's Pnl. ace." in each of.the great naval ports 'throush'oiit the Empire.for sailors of tho Roval Navv and merchant .service, and it was promised that one of' these hostels should ho erected in Wellington.. I think I -would 'be lacking in courtesy if I did not take notice of this proposal, and I therefore desire to 6tate that whilo it is impossible at the present stage lot me to indicate in any respect what the decision of the trustees may be with regard to the expenditure of the Surplus Wool Eund. I think I may say that this suKaestion will receive very careful consideration when the proper time arrives. Mv personal view is that in this, as in manv other matters,' "charity begins at home/' and our first duty, when wo know what money we have to deal with, will ;be\to see that the widows and children and other dependants of tho men who have lost their lives or been wounded duriiur the Great Waivis-ships It.-jii-iiis between' New Zealand and ' other ports, are .properly provided for. Whether the trustees will regard "Jack's Palace" as ,i suitable scheme to support or not I cannot sav. but in my opinion it iindoubtedlv is one that cannot fail to .meet with the sympathy of all who ara 'concerned about our sailors' welfare, nml have not vet forgotten tho inestimable services which they gave to ihe Empiro (iuriii? its time of trial. I dvsire to assure all those who are interested In the orpooscd homes and h/Btels for Bailors that their scheme will .not be overlooked when the shcepowncrs meet, (o decide on the allocation of their Surplus Wool Eund.—l ami etc.,
