A Lenton pastoral instruction Ins been issued bv Dr. H. W. Cleary, Poliinn Catholic Bishop of Auckland, which is to bo read in all tho churches of his diocese. Opening with a referenco to the signing of pence, the pastoral pro ceeds: "Two Continents are ringing with the clamour of arms and the clash of fighting nations. Side by side with this bodily struggle there goes ever on tho unceasing and still greater war of ideals. It is a war of conquest; a striving for world domination, and on one.side of it arc massed all the varied forces that (separately or leagued together) are in conflict with Christ and Christianity, and the sacred truths and principles for, which theso stand. The battle-ground of this- campaign against the Saviour and His salvators is tho home, tho school, the Press, on tho stage, and in certain pases of industrial life:" The Bishop emphasises that ninny people havo little idea of the magnificent way in which the general development of .scientific knowledge is friendly to tho faith of Christians. He also criticises that "tho agnostic era" harrcd God by law from the Government schools. "Catholics," ho adds, "must over romnin- in protest against n system which deprives tho child in school 'during its most impressionable years of the most educativn possession of our race." Unwholesome fiction is referred to a» more.deadly in' the home than tho germs of typhoid' and influenza. As a remedy, the Bishop suggests a daily practice should bo tho tiio : reading of some pious iiutruclivu book, especially tho Book of books—the Holy Scriptures.
