THE MASTERTON MEETING

BED RIBBON AND AFFECTATION SUCCESSFUL.

(Special Correspondent.) Thorp was a very large crowd at Opakl for the autumn meeting of the Mas}® 1 '"? Racing Club. Silken Item was the Quickest To begin, and she led Fortune Teller and Kildce into the straight. Here tl.o fell away. and Fortune Toller took charge. She v.-on comfortably from Cclmisia, who beat Kildeo by a head. Gold Pan was close up fourth. The winner i» owned by Mr. W. Bradford and trained by J. M'Laujhton. She was well handled by E The el good-looking Miss Gold was at- n very short price in the Telephone Ifaiidicap, and the chance was 03 indicated on tlio-machine for tho filly was early in the lead, and led all the .way Mosthenes and Stutter were prominent early but the latter failed to finish on. Miss Gold won easing up by two lengtlin from Mosthenes. Probate was the saw? distance away, and Stutter finished, next. Parorangi and Galore fell after going a furlonir TUe horses were uninjured, but T. Pritchard (Galore) had his collarbone and some ribs broken. Chimera, and Astinomo were the only ones backcd in the Flying Handicap, and the top weight had a slight call in the liettiu" when th.e machine closed. Astinomo took charge after gointr a furlong, and'soon had a big break on the favourite and Torfrcda, who: were together n 6econd place. Bonettbr and Chimera both finished well, but Astinomc held her own, ind won comfortably by half a length. Chimera and Torfrcda finished in a line, and the .iudge gn-vo a dead heat, for second place. Chimera's ruler allowed Astinomo to secure too bi-r a break in the oarlv part of the race. The top weight finished remarkably well, and came from «, long way back, but she could not concede Astinomo a start, and 181b. as well. Dpinty St-ep. Red Ribbon, and Rose Wreat.h were backed in that order for the Autumn Handicap. Rose Wreath went oil with the lead, but six furlongs from homo Daintv Step joined hor, pud the pair led into the straight. Then Red Ribbon took charge and without being extended won in a canter. Dainty Step had to be ridden' out to beat. Multaine. Rose Wreath was a poor fourth and Wishful was a furlong away. Considering that she. had not been prepared to go a distance Dainty Step's "howing was good, arid she should be useful over middle distances later on. The Wellington-owned Canvon was a hot favourite for the Juvenile Handicap. After b«in<r in the front nearly nil the way she "faded in the last half-furlong,, and was beaten into third place. The .winner turned up in the well-bred Raceful (Martian— Red) who came from a long way bnclt in the straight, and just, got un. Lit'tlo River, another Martian, also finished well, and beat the favourite on tho post. No excuses could he mad« for Canyon who had ovorything in her favour, but does not. stay as yet. Another of the progeny of Hos? Red scored in the seven furlongs Hack Race. This was Risingham, who stripped very well, and was olwiys in a prominent nositinn. After allowing Stutter to lead into the straight Risingham took charge, and won by half a- dozen lengths. Hallowvonia was a head away, end then came Probate. Amongst the field wcro the bracketed pair Rebuff and Neganbo. The latter is a good-loolcinf grey ending, and he moved nicely in his preliminary but failed to show up in the rice. Jcbuff stripped well, but raced badly. Risingham was lookinr as well as eve-- h» did. and his owner Mr. W. HigHUs would not hear of his defeat as he had shown up well in the. The last-named jnmned out in front, and led nil the way, winning by three lengths. There was a izood race for second pines between Scornful and Mntatua and the former got the position by a length. Pnnurv Rose who does not go well on ton of the ground, was beaten off. Affectation seems to be backward, and his performance was not impressive cough for hi' success in the St. Leg" l - at Ellcrslle. Import drew the inside, and began smartly, hut Sweet, Memory soon ran to her, and always hail the Issue in gafe-kcening. flho won by throe lengths from Import, "'ho had to ridden out to beat Timidity. Prince Randall was fourth. Import has been most consistent of late, hut she unable to do better than fill minor positions.
