„ -D V Ca P e , Tow ». March 19. Iho new Parliament mo t andre-elect-ed Mr. Ivrige Speaker. The ■■Governor-General, in liis speech, did not refer to the political situation. Ho announced proposals to check profiteering, secure fair rents; and deal with currency anill banking reform and the housing question. Measures to secure industrial peace and co-operation of employers and workers through joint councus, and the regulation of hours and wages, and to foster development of industries were outlined. A programme of rannay construction and of expansion irrigation, and the reform of the native administration were also referred to.
A monster demonstration of women of/ all classes and colours., numbering several thousands', passed resolutions against the high cost of living, and matched in procession to Parliament, where the Premier (General Smuts) addressed Ihem, statmg that Bills dealing with profiteering, speculation in foodstuffs, corners, and combines would bo introduced rmmediately.
