Tho Magistrate's Court at Cromwell was occupied yesterday in hearing cases MBninst landowners for failing to destroy rabbits, the charges being laid under the Act of 1918. When-the defence was heard Mr. Mosley, S.M., said ho had no option, as power was absolutely in. tho hands of the inspectors, who had only to swear that they had visited nny area affected, and that in their opinion sufficient necessary' steps were not being taken to destroy rabbits, and a conviction must follow. Although the Act mieht he excellent', ho \va9 placed in an extraordinary' and unfortunate, position. Pines were. imposed, varying from ,£lO9 in one. instance (for a second offence), to. ,£4O ' and .£lO. jn isix cases of first offences; It .-is that the landowners will make strong representations to the Government regarding the position.
