Apparently the members the conference, who arc nil successful businessmen, advocate taking the engineering work away from the engineering department and handing it over—to whom? "To a separate department," they vaguely say. •■Would the owner of a clothing factory take the making of a nfew pattern of garment away from his tailors and hand it ovec, to ft separate department, perhaps tho milliners? < The suggestion is too ludicrous. ; - Why did the conference not make somo fltiiftrnetivo suggestion instead of passing a destructive resolution which lends nowhere except to chaos ? They plead for strict business lines, but J will, make ■ bold to pay that not 0110 of the members would apply to his own business the principle of taking awav work from the branch which understands it and handing it over to the ninn in the street. No, if a branch of his business was not giving liirn satisfaction ho would stir it tip and make it g<\ If the Government says sulxirdinato other work to hydro development, its present engineers can do that as well as any ROparnte, and therefore, amateur, department.—l am, etc., BUILD UP, DON'T BREAK DOWN.
