TRAVELLERS' CONFERENCE
FURTHER REMITS PASSED. The Commercial Travellers' Conference wns continued yesterday, the business being conducted behind closed doors. The conference endorsed tho action oi the Wellington Chamber of Commerce in regard' to the pillaging of cargo on ships and wharves, . and recommended that imprisonment without tho option of a fine should bo the penalty. A resolution was passed thanking shipping companies for their courtesies in the past. •' It was'also-decided that a deputation should interview the General Manager for Railways and place before him various matters that had'been brought up during tho conference. • In order to strengthen the finance of the united association, it was decided to increase the levy by Gd., making the total levy Is. fid. per. member. Mr.- C. P. Skerrett, K.C., by mvita- ; tion addressed the conference upon the aims and objects of the Welfare League, receiving an attentive hearing,, and being 1 accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Mr. F. W. Manton, a former president, gave an interesting address., in the course of which ho ,commended to the attention of the delegates the establishment of commorcial scholarships which would enable bright and, promising -youths to further their 1 commercial knowledge and experience by travel.. . Mr. Dongall M'Pherson (Dunedin) was elected president for the ensuing year, and Mr. W. F.: Herrick ' (Canterbury) treasurer. - An invitation from Dunedin to hold the - next annual conferencc there was Tho conference closed at mid-day after votes of-thanks had been passed to the office-bearers and to the officers of the local club for their hospitality.
