STUDY OF ECONOMICS
ENCOURAGEMENT FROM SIR ROBERT STOUT.
By Tolecraph—Press Association. Dunedin, March IG. The long list of donations which have been received ■ from time to time by Otago University was added to to-day when Sir Robert Stout wrote to tho University stating that he had forwarded to tho Secretary of the Treasury . an nssigument of .i'soo worth of inscribed stock for the establishment of n scholarship in economics. In the course of n covering letter, Sir Bobert says: "I wish that this sum, with the gift the Government will give, sliduld bo set aside as for a scholarship or prize for tne person who obtains the highest _ marks in first-class honours in economics for the year in Otago University, without distinction of sex, of class, of race, or of creed. I also think it would bo wise to set aside one-tenth of the income each year to be added to the capital sum, so that in future years, if interest falls, the amount will be kept up to, at all events, what it is at present, and, the accumulation if continued for. ninny years, may enable a second scholarship to be granted. In my opinion the study of economy should bo encouraged. It is the one thing that is needed in New Zealand."
