ACCESS TO THE TFRRACE
THE LIFT QUESTION AGAIN,
Several attempts have been made in the past bv residents of the Terrace and tho near portions of Kelburn to interest tho Citv Council in the matter of improving the access to that area by the provision of an electric lift, but these efforts have so far proved unsuccessful. Recently tho situation took a new turn when tho matter was again considered, with a view to installing a lift with private canital. . Tn conversation with Mr. 1., Salek of the Terrace, a Dominion representative war, informed that a communication had been directed to the City Council, recuesting its authority to construct an electric, lift to the .Terrace by way of Church Street. The need for such a lift is reearded as beyond dispute, and Mr. Salek has represented to the council that he is prepared to have the lift constructed under the supervision of the Citv Endneer immediately, provided, of course, that the necessary authority is forthcoming'. He further proposes that the lift, should at first be worked as a nurelv private-' undertaking, and then tho council would have the opportunity of tnkinK it over at an approved valuation bv a competent authority. Tho matter has been referred to tho Citv Eniineer. and. it is understood, is now in the hands of the Tramways Committee, which lias been asked to bring down a report on the scheme. Some time nao a count was taken of 'tho number of neonle who went up and down Church Street daily, and the. figures furnished convincing evidence of the desirability of installing a passenger lift, to replace tho present oxhausting climb.
