BREACHES OF STAMPS ACT
BJr Telegraphi-Special Correspondent. \ I .Masterton, March 12. At the Mast'l'ton Court Charles Gray and William Gordon Laing, of Bfit-ersdale. were' charged with a breach of the Stamps Act.
Grav. .who was arraigned on two chorees, said that in ignorance lie had sSiened come receipts without affixing a ''stamp. He had been told by the station manager, who paid him, tnat it was not necessary to stamp the receipts, aa the cheques (riven were payable to order. Sereeant Miller'said that inquiries made showed that Gray's version'of tho affair was true. ' llis Worship.said,ho believed Grays storv. but he mustiniposo a substantial fine iis a warninz to others. Defendant would be fined 40s. and costs on each elinrL'e. , \ - ' The charge against Laing was then taken. . Mr. Praenall said, tlmt Lamg had sinned a book, and as he did not have a stamp, and the cheque was mado to order, he proposed to send along later a stamped receipt., Laing had forgotten to forward tho stamped receipt. His Worship said he regarded this as ji. more serious offenco than Gray s, as Laiwr knew that lie was doing wrong •when ho gave the unstamped receipt. Lainc would bo fined .£5 and costs.
