CITY COUNCIL

LAST NIGHT'S MEETING.' The City Council met last night, when there were present: Mr. G. Frost (De-puty-Mayor) and Councillors W. J. Thompson, W. H. Bennett, T. Forsyth, L. M'Kenyie,-jr. F. Luckie, J. O. Sliorland, J. M. Dale, J. Glover, J. Hutchison, and P. Fraseiv M.P. The By-Laws Committee recommended that the City Solicitor should instructed to frame a by-law for submission to the council to provide that all licensed carriers when engaged in plying or working for hire on any stand or at any place should wear a Iwdge, with distinguishing number thereon, to be issued 'by the council. The committee had received a deputation from the Taxi Owners' Association with reference to taxicab stands in the-city, suggesting that the stands be balloted for. The matter was receiving consideration, and a report would bo presented at a later 6tage.

Councillor Luckie eaid the issue of badges to licensed carriers would Assist the city inspectors, and would ho a safeguard to the public. The inspectors had difficulty at present in detecting unaccused carriers, who were believed to be responsible for the disappearance of luggage lately. ' /.■■■.• Councillor Eraser objected to any slur being cast upon the carriers. The thefts lmd not been committed by a carrier at all. '

Councillor Luckie insisted fhat he had not imputed dishonesty to the general body of carriers. The report was adopted, The Outlying Districts Committee recommended, and it was resolved, that a request to provide handrails at the rights-of-way leading out. on to the top of Kelburn Parade should be acceded to.

The tender of Mr. 11. Stanford for. the erection of a pavilion at the Kilbimio l'nrk was accepted.
