THE HILLS CUP WON BY WAITANGI The contest for tlvs Mills Cup, n handsome silver trophy presented to tho Port Nicholson Yacht Club by the lute Mr. K. C. Mills (at one time commodore of the club) was held on Saturday afternoon. The cup is valued at about 150 guineas, and is for competition among first-class yachts, having' to be von thro; times in succession or five times at intervals before it becomes the properly of the winner. In 1918 and 1919 test races were held and won respectively by J.r. W. Duncan's Viola and Mr. E. Bucholzs W aircro 11. The weather of Saturday was all that could be desired, and a finp race was ■ li'itnes.oed. There/was a light northwesterly briwzu at 2 p.m., and the ha l ™" caps wero allotted on the basis w the amount of wind then blowing, but wfote 3 p.m. the breeze freshened, The course, aliout 18 miles, whs from off Cl.v<.e Quay Wharf to outside Jwmnnham Buoy to tho Pinnacle Buoy off Seatoun. korokoro Buoy. Jorninßham, and back to the starting line. • I . At 3 p.m. sharp a flyinpf start was niatle by the nine competitors. The Waitangi immediately took the lead, folllowed by the Maraud- Off Point Halsvrcll the Waitan?i was well in front w 'th jj ie Marangi a good distance in front of tiie Ilotiri 11, Ailsa. Wairere 11, Viola. Kona, and Atalwita. Most of the competitor? were smart in sotting their spinnakers. The Marangi had her mainsail .wefed, but this was a handicap in a i)roo7.P called for a full canvas. Ihe WaitanEi was three minutes in advance of the Marangi rounding- the Pinnacle huoi. with the Maransi two minutes nho/jd oi the Kotiri 11. Thsn followed the Bona a couple of lemrths further back- j] ie Wanderer and Viola being a similar distance behind. The' Altai. Wairere 11, and Atalanta next -rounded the buoy in that order. Th e Waitangi made good head-ray on the boat up to the Korokoro bunv, tli; jib topsail which she hoisted oft Somes Island improving her speed. Tho Waitangi set a course for -Termngham. carrying topsail and spinnaker. Several followed suit, but with the backing of the wind to westward balloon jibs were hoisted. Skilful handling of the vessel by Captain J. I-owry enabled the pns=6ne»rs to see tha raco from 6tart tofinish.
SECOND-CLASS YACHTS. The second-class yacht- race for the To Burn Cur> was also held on Saturday afternoon with the following result:— J Webb's Windward (handicap d2muU, 1; W. Duncan's Wyolo (fimin.), 2; G. Neill's Lime (Umin.), 3; Scott and Jordan's Galatea (scr.), i. The course was over ti distance of about 9-i buics.
