GERMAN WARSHIPS AS PRIZES

REMINDER OF FAMOUS FIGHTS.

The Crown, represented by Mr. G. Simonds, recently asked the Prize Court for condemnation of tho German cruiser Emden, which surrendered to the Australian cjuiser S.Vdney (Captain Glossop) on November 9, 1914, after an engagement off tho Keeling or Cqpos Islands, in the Indian Ocean.

Counsel explained that the vessel, being a warship, had never been brought within the cu/tody of the Admiralty Marshal, and that it. was necessary to obtain _ a formal order condemning her as a prize of war. Tho President (Sir Henry Duke) mads the order, and said that the record contained in tho dispatch of Captain Glossop was a vory proud one for tho Australian contingent of His Majesty's Navy. Mr. H. L. Murphy made a similar application in tho case _of the _ German cruiser Konigsberg, which, having taken refuge in the Rufigi River, German East Africa, was attacked on July 6 and 11, 1915. by the river monitors Severn and Mersev. was reduced to a complete wreck, and taken possession of by forces under the command of Vice-Admiral King Hall. His Lordship made a similar order. Ho also condemned tho German vessel Somali, which was with the Konigsberg at. the timo of the action, and was set on fire bv the. Germans. In the case of the German armed vessel Hermnii von AVissman, Mr. Pcafco asked for a similar decree, explaining that site was captured by a Nyassaland Government cunboat on Lake Nyassa, alter an engagement which resulted in the surrender of the ship and crew. The application was granted. With reeard to tho German armed vessel Kingani, Mr. AV. Price applied for condemnation. The Kingani was captured on Lake Tanganyika, Africa, on December 2G, 1915, after an engagement which resulted in her surrender. Tho application was successful. The German submarine U C 5, Mr. Boustead said, appeared to havo been sunk, and afterwards salved and brought into port in the custody of tho Admiralty.
