NEW ZEALAND BISLEY

SECOND DAY'S MATCHES

BELT SERIES COMMENCED

Following on a very sharp night,- beautiful weather again favoured marksmen at Trentham yesterday._ when the fifteenth mutual prize meeting of the Dominion ltiflo Association was continued. Tn tho opening stages of the shooting the light was very bright, tod as th.3 sun was behind the targets, the glare mndo it a matter of somo difficulty to find the bull's-eyes. As tho morning wore on, however, tho conditions improved, and some good scores were made as a consequence. Tho forenoon was verv hot indeed, hut in thn afternoon n light, cool, westerly breeze arose, which, from the fact that it was of tho notorious "fish-tail" variety made matter unpleasant for the marksmen.

The Ammunition Question, Th? question of ammunition was again referred to by Colonel I?. .1. Collins, chief executive cfficer, when addr".s,sins a few words lo the competitors before they proceecbd to the firms: mounds in the afternoon to commence the first of the « atches counting for the Championship Belt. Colonel Collins stated that some complaints had been made about the quality of (lie ammunition, but ho pointed out that as no bftter was obtainable the competitors would have to make the best of things. He hoped that it would be possible to secure some good, reliable prewar stock for use during tho firing of the King's Prize Match. H? could assure competitors that tho ammunition being used at present was superior to that supplied at tho big English meeting at Bisley last war. While on the subject, of ammunition, Colonel Collins issued a warning to competitors. He had reason to think that some men were using cartridges thqt had not been obtained from the ammunition store on the irango. and lie declared that if these men were detected thev would be disqualified for the remainder of the meeting, and perhaps for nil timf. The first match of the day was the Onening Match, seven shots at 300, .50(1, and GOO vards. Scores made in this match do not. count for the Belt, but those who take part in it have rin op-noi-tunitv of 'Vetting their eyes in. The winner of tlis match was Rifleman A. Dinpie. of Dunedin, who scored 97 mit of a nossible 105. II it'em an J. P. White, of Auckland City Rifle Club, and C J Paw of Linton, also made 37 each, but as thev did not finish up so well as Rifleman Dipnie in their final shots they wer.? awarded second and third place respectively. Deputy-President R, .T. King, of Opaki the present holder of the Be t, put. on the possible of 3o at 500 yards, and made n total of 95. Servant L. Lovedav M.M.. of Ohura, the winner of the Ki'V* Prize at BWey last vear. made 90 and Rifleman A. Henderson, of Akarana. who is 73 years of age. and the oldest competitor on the rang,9. mado a score of 83. One other possible was also established during the match. Kiflpnian Tv. Jngnuu. of Ilawcra, scoring 35 at 000 afternoon the first match of the Belt series, the Westland. was commenced. The conditions for this match ft re the some ns 'for the opening match, seven shots at 300, 50a, and 000 yards. Tho winner proved to be Pieman A. Govenlock. of Linton, who scored 93 out of a possible 105. Commencing with S4 out of 35 aI. 300 yards, he'found tho test a little harder ft th» next distance, where he dropped to 31. At 000 yarns, however, he imnroved and put on 33. Rifleman W. Hudson (Wanganui) was second, with a score of 97, .made up of ,11 at 300 vards. 34 at 500 yards, and 32 at the lest rwe. Third place was allotted to an ex-champion, fliflemnn P. H, .Tames, of Napier, who also made 97. .Tame; started off with 32, but at 500 yards he finished up" one point 'behind Biflemm Hudson. M the next distance, however, lie closed with 32. The second match of the afternoon was th* Canterbury. Match, ten shots at GOO yards, which vns ivon by Biflemnn H. 'N Croxton, of Tfarori, who made the possib'» of sfl. Rifleman R. C. Barkle, o.f AVellington Suburbs, fired into second place witli 49, all of his shots being "bulls" except, the seventh, which was a k Piflemen IT. B. Maunsell (Onakil, P. Kennedy (Te Kjiitil, and E. A. Brtllingef (Petone) each made 48, and Rifleman C. Dui'stnn, of Waihi. scored '17. An interesting feature in connection with the present meeting is the largely increased number of Senior Cadets competing compared with last vear. Anions these is Cadet A. J. Lambert, of Blenheim. who is only 17 years old., He is doing very well, notwithstanding that ho has had some rather bad luck, .4]: though he has competed suHcessfully in service matches, having won his College Cup at Blenheim last year, he has never previously fi"ed under Bisley conditions. In the Westland Mutch, the first of tho Belt series, he. shot exceedingly well ve.sterday, his total scoro being 91 out of a possMiln 105. At each of iho 300 and 590 yan.s -anges he scored. 31 and at the next ram'e, IiOO yards, he obtained 32 om of 35. His vcspectiv? range scores werei 300 yank SMIISi; 500 yards, 4-W5555: fiOO J'Ji'ils. I 1: lnis in the Canterbury Match, fircl at COO yards, that he hail renl misfovt.me. Opening with two bull's eyes, his aperture, sight suddenly collapsed, with the result ihat lie became discone»rted and broke down, finishing up with only 35 out .if 50. His score was 5521:255423—t0ta1, ~'s. Unfortunately Cadets have not offered themselves in large numbers for tho championship, as up to the present only forty entries have been received.' Arrangenient.- i:;>vo been made with the Railway Department for a sneeial t rn i n to loft\c Tronihnm nt C.47 this cvpnin fT to take competitors into town. °
