A SPORTS QUESTION
DEFINITION OF.THE AMATEUR
A- meeting of delegates from various governing sports organisations will be held on Tuesday afternoon next in Wellington, "imder the auspices of the Sports Protection League, to discuss tVe important question of the amateur status. Mr. C. P. Skorrett, K.C., will preside. The object of the. conference is, if possible, to arrive at a general definition of the amateur, acceptable to all the more'important branches of amateur sport in New Zealand, and suitable for submission .to the governing 'bodies in England and elsewhere for consideration. There is a general consensus of opinion that anomalies exist at present which should be removed, particularly with regard to tho recognition of. tho amateur in one class of sport as an amateur in another. It i* considered that a conference, should greatly help to jplear away these difficulties, and ensure better relationship between the various branches of sport. The question is a wide one, and delegate? should come prepared to discuss every aspect of amateurism. The following questions will no doubt be eons'dored:-(l) Tho possibility of the acceptance of a general definition; (2) whether the defin ; Hon should bo restricted or enlarged; (3) the question of rcciiirocity between tho various sports organisations; (4) the relationship of Xew Zealand with governing bodies abroad.. . ,
