THE WETTEST FEBRUARY

OVER 51 INCHES OF RAIN. ■ February is not usually a very wet montlf in' Wellington, though the. mean rainfall, which is 3.31 inches. 6hows that it is not so dry as may be generally Pupposed. This month has proved unusually wet, and the soaking rains of the present week should have, a very beneficial effect all over th'e district for the next few weeks. The actual rainfall for the month up till 9 a.m. yesterday (supplied by the Meteorological' office) was 5.51 inches, and since then there has been further-rain. As the result of these bountiful downpours all the reservoirs arc full fo' overflowing, and Hie country has not looked so green at a February end for many a year.

.V: Wellington College there is a. rain gauge, and somo of the students take' a lively interest in meteorology-. Whether it rained more heavily in the college grounds thanit djd in the city is a moot point, but the college boys give the rainfall up till 9 a.m. yesterday at G.9D inches—nearly 7 inches. Furthermore, the college gives the fall on February 25, % anil 27 (ending at 9 a.m.') as 3.19 inches. It is difficult to., exnlaiu th° wide divergence in the records, which cannot quite be accounted for by the small distance between tho two'recording stations.
