NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By Gujncob.) The fieldß for the openinc of the Wanjanui Club's nieoting are much larger than iB usually the caEC on this course, but the hack cventß will fine down consider, ably, as several of the horses are in two r'aceß. The consistent Borcalis, runner-up in his last three starts, may be favourite in the Stewards' Handicap, which should ho a fast-run race. Rose Wreath will not Btart in thiß event, but will bo reserved for the Oup. The Woodville double winner. Dainty Step, looks well in the Petrie Hack Handicap, six furlongs, in which Bhe has 91b. less to carry, than she won with at Woodville. Quiniro has a big reputation, and he ft.uy be the hardest to beat. The Westmerc Hurdles, two miles, should suit that good Btaycr Explorer, but Goldstream also stays on well, and the pair should be troublesome, Golden Bubble has a big. weight in tho Victory Welter Handicap, but he showed good form over a nine-furlonE course in Sydney, so the distance should not trouble him. He has a lot of pace, and this will allow him to set a position early, which is « hie factor on this course. The Cup is regarded as a very open race. An acceptance ol 15 in a record for tho race. The Fordell pair Oratress and Client have got a large following, but no one can forecast the absolute favourite. TROTTING OTAHUHU MEETING. By Telograph—Special Correspondent. Auckland, February 25. Though a thunderstorm tell about nine o'clock this morning, the weather outlook soon improved, and the Otalmliu Trotting Club was favoured with a good attendance for the second day ot its Slimmer Meeting. The track was at first, heavy, hut gradually improved, and the few showers that fell did not-seriously interfere with the racing. The totalisator handled £30.661.

There were ten starters in the Dominion Handicap, Emperor and Lord Kosp brine tho brat backed, but Partner end Steel Bell also had many sunnorters. Emperor hesitated a little at the start, .but the. others got'away well. When the field settled down, Miss Kolfc had established a clear lead. After about three-quarters of o mile had been traversed, Strategy went up to the leader. Emperor lying in a handy position. Steel Bell- was steadily gaining ground. Half a mile from homp Emperor beiran to fade away. Miss Eolfc was still lending, with Manuka Park in close attendance. As the field turned into the straight, Steel Bell challenged the leaders, and cornine on at a Kreat pace, snatched victory from Miss Ttolfo by a head after a mo«t exciting finish. Partner looked very dannerous at one stage. Lord Hose ran disappointingly.

The Eoval Oak Handicap was won by Borothy Dimple in fine style. She trotted faultlessly from start to finish. Ab the field entered the straight Eccentric looked dangerous, but. could not sustain his run. Strategy came with a great dash at the last; but could not quite reach Borothy Dimple.
