THE NAVY LEAGUE
PAST TEAR'S ACTIVITIES OF WELLINGTON BRANCH. The annual report of-the Wellington branch of the Navy League, to be presented at the annual meeting to-morrow, states that the membership roll steadily increases,'2ls new members having been added during the year. The school membership is a record for the Wellington branch, and is more than double any previous year. Amongst the adult members aro 17 life members and STO guinea mbmbers. The majority of the members are ladies. The Education Committee has a goucl record or work for the year, and all members of tlie executive weru ready to assist in visiting schools, and generally promoting an interest in sea-power. Twenty-seven schools were presented with New Zealand ensigns, and the thanks ot the league are due to .Lord Jellicoo for permitting his officers to visit a .number of schools for the purposes.of presenting ilags. These officers were received with* die urea test enthusiasm by our youthful Navy Leaguers. Lantern lectures on the Navy In me great war were delivered in different parts of flie city, and many ladies and gentlemen delivered short addresses in different schools throughout the Wellington' province, setting forth the objects and aims of the league, and describing' some of the thrilling events of our great Navy and mercantile marine. The Ladies' Auxiliary branches at Wellington, Masterton, Carterton, Piefon and Marton, although created to help with naval chanties and comforts for sailors in wartime, have now entered whole-heartedly into the propaganda work of the league, and the largo increase of membership and increased credit balance during,.the Inst four years arc almost entirely due to tho splendid efforts of the ladies.
King George's Fund in Wellington has now been closed, and the final chorine for iOTG Cs. 9d. remitted to London through the Office of Internal Affairs: The total nmount received by the Wellington branch for this fund was ,£B-151 10s. 8(1. The Naval Dependants Fund »eali«ed .£1.3.579 19s. 7d. the gross amount being remitted to London. In addition, the Wellington Navy League assisted the Sailors' Comforts Fund, the French Bed Cross, Minesweepers, Belgian .. "Relief. Roberts Memorial Workshops, boys of the battle-cruiser New Zealand, Orphan Homes at Portsmouth, Plymouth, and the Nore. and other war charities. In all, the Wellington Navy Loa-eme collected in money about .£23,000. The gross amount has been remitted to the specific charities for which the money was subscribed.
