VACUUM OIL V. AMERICAN SHIPOWNERS
SUCCESSFUL CLAIM FOR DAMAGES.
By Telegraph—Press - Association-. Christchurch, February 25. In the Supreme- Court Mr.- JusticeHerd man heard a claim by.-the. Vacuum Oil Company against the owners ot. the American ship Luzon, for the sum ot i2(86 Us. lid., on account of damage alleged to have been caused to. cargo through unseaworthiness of the vessel, or in (lie alternative, negligence. Counsel for plaintiff company, said that whenthe vessel arrived it was found that through defective hatches salt water had entered the hold, and corroded many tins of oil, the cargo.-on,inspection beingin a shocking condition. A : bank, approached the plaintiff, company* and rave an undertaking.that the amount of the judgment wwld.be..mid witbiii a. week of the Court's decision. After, hearing evidence, His Honour said thathe could not take into consideration the variation in the rate of exchange. Plaintiff's counsel amended the claim, and His Honour gave judgment for .£2024 13s. 3d. damages, and .«« 4s. Gd; interest,-as-ses'ing the costs at a hundred guineas, plus witnesses' expenses and disbursements.
