CASE OF TETANUS

MR. R. D. HARKNESS, OF TE HORO. Many will regret to learn that Jfr. R. D. Harkness, the well-known Te Horo former, and a son of Jlr. J. G. Harkness (chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board), has boon unfortunate enough to develop tetanus as the result of an untoward accident, and his condition yesterday afternoon was most serious. It seems that Mr. Harkness on Wednesday last week ibis unloading sonic rata logs at a neighbour's farm to be cut up into firewood lengths. He was throwing out a big lop from his own cart, when ono end of it caught in the oilskin overcoat ho was wearing. It would have knocked him over, but rather than allow that to happen he jumped from the cart and landed on some of the logs he had thrown out. A splinter in one of them penetrated his boot and sock, and ran from two to three inches into the side of his foot. Though he suffered a good deal from the wound, up till Sunday last he seemed to be recovering satisfactorily, but on Wednesday Dr. Sharp, who was •dtending to him, discovered symptoms of tetanus. As this developed it was deemed advisable to get further advice, 'ind Dr. Hislop was summoned yesterday morning, and reached To Horo during the ufternoon. Vcrv small hopes arc entertained for Mr. 'Harkncss's recovery.
