INDIAN TRADE
PREFERENCE QUESTION DEBATED,
Allahabad, February. 20. Tho TnmeTial Legislative Council debated the need of a preference system for India. Sir George Barnes, member of the Viceroy's Council, moved for the apnointment of a committee to examine trade statistics, and give an opinion as to whether it would bo consistent with the interests of India to apply to tho Indian Customs tariff a system of preference in favour of goods of European oririn. Ho explained trtat the reason for raising this thorny and difficult question was that the principle of Imperial Dreference had recently been adopted by the United Kingdom. Tho Government desired a purely dispassionate view of the Question, but if India accepted the principle of Imperial preference the excise dutv on cotton piece goods must be totallv abolished. , After opposition from some of the Indian members, tho committee was ap-pointed.-Aus.-N.Z.
