Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Davies, of Greytown. left on Monday for thoir new homo in Nelson, where Mr. Davies will take up the portion of curator of the Cawthorn Institute. Prior to leaving Greytorn, Mr. Davies was mot by a number of tho citizens and presented with a cheque as a token of esteem and appreciation of liis services while headmaster of the District High School. A new .system of rating on tho unimproved value of tho Carterton borough will come into operation in March next. There is a fair area of farm land within the borough, and it is understood that n petition will be presented to the Be rough Counoil at the next meeting asking that they be allowed to secede from the borough and join the county. A' case of diphtheria in a mild form has made its appearance in tho Carterton district. The Rev, J. Ward, who has been Methodist minister in Carterton for some time past, will leave the circuit in April to ta.ke up similar duties at Brooklyn, Wellington. Both tho Rev. and Mrs. Ward will bo greatly missed in Carterton, as during their Say they have made many friends. At a meeting oh residents cf Carterton on Monday evening, it was dccidod to form a Caledonian Society, and to adopt the rules of the AVnirarapa Caledonian Soc'ety. Officers were elected as follow:—President, Mr. T. S. A reus; vice-presidents, Messrs. D. Reid and W. Watcrson; directors, Messrs, J. Stewart, J. J. Knox Smith, P. Shankland., T. Reid, J. A, Dudson, E. Reading, B. Reading, G. Dykes, W. Chalmers, W. Miller, F. H. Wise, It. Stark, W. Hall, R. Selby, and G. Huglian. It was decided that the membership fee for ladies be 10s. It was decided to make application to the AYa : rarapa I'. and A. Society for the use of their grounds, and to hold a. further meeting on Monday next to consider the question of holding a sports gathering at an early date. There was some talk of erecting the Ruareahunga bridge, which recently collapsed at Kahutara, nearer Pukio, with a view of serving a more popnlous district. At the last meeting of the Peatherston County Council twenty-two ratepayers of the Tarangauui riding petitioned the courcil to take steps to renow the structure, and objected to the present site being abandoned. Tho petition was supported by a deputation, who pointed out that the settlers of the Taranganui riding were prepared to foot the bill. Tho deputation was assured that the council vould put in two test piles ond arrange to get the money, as soon as the special rating area was defined. Ar assurance was alf'o given that tho bridge would be erected 011 the old site. The Fentherston County Council has decided to purchase an Acme stone crusher. The. Carterton Amateur Swimming Club's weekly competition resulted: 200.nk handicap—M. King (ssec.), 1; M. Kiddie (35?ec.), 2: L. Fairbrother (scr.), I). 50yds. breast-stroke handicap—M. Kidd : e 1; L.
