RIFLE SHOOTING

DOMINION ASSOCIATION. The preliminary arrangements in connection with the Dominion Riile Association riflo meeting, to bo held in March next, are in a very forward state. Colonel E.: J. Collins, 0.M.G., chief executive officer, recently visited Trcntiham, and in conjunction with the camp staff' thero discussed and completed several matters in regard to the meeting. To overcome the difficulties experienced last year in laving the camp at such a distance from the range, it. has- been decided that the camp shall be pitched on the old site of the D.R.A. camp used in 11) U. -Adjacent to this site aro several hutments, which may be used as mess-rooms for competitors and thoso men engaged as markers at the meeting. The Salvation Army has- placed their Institute Hall at the disposal of the association as a mess-room for officers and staff, while tho Church of England Institute is available for use as headquarters office. The Ordnance Department will supply the camp equipment, blankets and waterproof sheets, and cooking utensils. The Army Service Corps will supply tho rations in bulk, for which arrangements are- being made to secure a caretaker to undertake the cooking and serving of same. The comfort and convenience of competitors is tho chief object the executivo officer has in view. The rifle question is a. very serious one, and will aftect the number of entries, las many intending competitors were given tft undei stand that the rew rifle-barrels were 1 on the water* This is not so. as they have only been recently shipped. Tho rule as regards rifles limits the use of competitors to any .30.') magazine riflo as issued by the New Zealand Defence Department. If not issued' by the New Zealand Defence Department tho riile must be of tho same pattern as those issued from Defence Stores, and must bear the Government viewer's mark, and be subject to the approval of the Executive Conlnittee. Match barrels are not allowed. The ammunition will be specially manufactured for the meeting. Railway warrants will be issued to all intending competitors on payment of entrance fee, and steamer fare concessions will be allowed by the shipping companies. The target accommodation provided by the Ordnance Department will be ample to keep all ranges goiiig. A qualified staff has been appointed to assist the executive in. carrying out the meeting, for which entries close on February 19. As before, Colonel R. J. Collins will be in command and control of the meeting, assisted by Colonel R. Hughes as superintendent range, officer, and Colonels Cresswell and Doull as officers in charge of ranges. Captain 11. Redmond,N.Z.P.S., has been appointed adjutant, and Captain Denton, N.Z.P.S., quartermaster. Major V. Dunne, Post and Telegraph Corps, will bo thel secretary, and Captain Felton will undertake tho duties of statistical officer.

OLD NAVAL CLUB. The Old Navals Defence Rifle- Club fired the second match of their third series on Saturday afternoon on Itho Trontham rifle range, the conditions being 10 shots and .lighters at each Sflfl and iX'O yards. A considerable amount of dissatisfaction was expressed, at the Seddon Tango being used, compelling the competitors to luivo a very much longer walk, and the high grass Almost hiding some of the targets.
