MUNICIPAL MILK SUPPLY

VISITED BY CITY COUNCILLORS.

With the idea of gaining first-hand knowledge regarding the working of tho City Council's milk fnctory at Rahui, near Opaki, a number of councillors paid a visit to the factory yesterday. The party comprised Councillors W. H. Bennett (chairman of the Milk Committee), .T. 0. Shorlnnd, L. M'Kenzie, W. J. Thompson, J. Glover, J. Hutchison, and C. H. Chapman. They were accompanied by Messrs. W. H. Morton (City Engineer), J. R, Palmor (Town Clerk), and Harlan, engineer to the municipal milk department. The journey to Rahui was made by motor, the party leaving the city about D o'clock in the morning. Everything connected with the factory was found to be thoroughly satisfactory, and the manoser (Mr. Bennett) was congratulated on the efficient manner in which the undertaking is being conducted. The factory was recenlly enlarged by the extension of the boiler house, and increased engine-power has also been made nvn.ilable. Although the party arrived too late to witness the actual handling of the milk, they were shown i lie system, by which the surplus cream is made into butter. The cool store'wns found to be working quite well, also the cheese manufacturing department. As far as could be learned, the farmers appeared to be well pleased with the treatment they are receiving regarding theit willc, and inquiries elicited that the prospects for the coming winter wero good'so far as the district wns concerned. Everything was found to be in readiness to plant the spare ground round the fnctory with trees and shrubs to afford protection from dust storms, and to give the place a pleasing appearance. It is intended to carry out this work in tho wet season. The factory is now well drained, the drainage being carried to the Opaki River, about 80 chains away.
