THE MILK AND BUTTER SUPPLY

Sir,—There is food for reflection in the address given bv Mr. Ward as published in 'Me Dominion. "No rther food could take t'lo place of milk." The Hermans long ago realised this, and they fixed the prico at 3d., per quart, and punished adulterators with six months' imprisonment, with no option. Here we pay 6d. per quart, and may "have to pay :tioi'e." We wero told a short time ago that butter will probably ho 4s per lb. as soon as the embargo is lifted. Surely tho menace with which we aro faced is second only to that of tho Hun. That the Euphrates (trade and commerce) will dry up—is drying up—is inevitable, but we should put forth our best energies to keep it flowing in the meantime. There is no time to lose, tho Government should look seriously into the matter, it is a very vital one. Farmers must be allowed to do the best ithey can for themselves, and we are told that to continue the butter subsidy would cost half a million a year. This would go a long way towards buying the land and equipping dairy factories for the wheLe of the Dominion. Tho Government knows the ins and outs of tho busine&s from A to V,. and can. if they choose, supply dairy produce at prewar prices.—l am, etc., JOHN PLOWAFAN.
