When tho farmers in tho role of consumer, went to purchase the product, of tho hides in the thapo of boots he found he was getting no benefit by telling the hides under market value as was his fellow-farmer in Australia who, though he sold his hides at is. per lb., was supplied with cheaper boots than the New Zealand consumer. It was indeed a hiae embargo, as someone had a lot to hide. Mr. Uebenton urged the farmers to seriously consider the question of starting a farmers' shipping company. With respect to the Mortage of superphosphate, and the high price of manures, the trouble was that there was only one firm in New Zealand in a position to treat rock phosphate, but shortly tho Auckland Fertiliser Company would be starting operations, and arrangements would be made for getting a shipment of rock phosphate from Nauru. Mr. A. T. Blake, M.R.8.V.5., the Government veterinary surgeon, was present, and gavo an address on diseases of cows, differentiating between the contagious end noncontagious varieties of the various aili m-.-nts. He asked the farmers to pay j greater attention to the sanitary cleans- ! ing of the teats and udder before mikj ing as a preventative to the spread of I contagious disease, and urged that pas. I hires be kept in good heart, as poor, dry lecd and consequent lack of nourishment was the cause of the death of a good many cows with "Waihi" disease. Mr. Blako answered a number of questions, and was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks for his address.

At the" Hastings ram fair Mr. C. Wagland, of Masterton, obtained OOgirs. for a Romney stud ram, this being the second highest price paid at tho fair. Mr.' Wngland sold flock Romney rams at 105gns. Mr. Queutin Donald, of Featherston, obtained S2gns. for a stud Romney ram, the highest price recorded at the sole. Mr. Donald obtained 17gns. for flock Romney rams. At Masterton the temperature in tho shado at 1 p.m. yesterday was Sfi degrees* HANAWATU A feature in connection with tho gross paddocks this season is the prevalence of white, clover. Nearly all the pastures are thickly impregnated with it, and although it is a generally accepted fact that it renews every three years, tho consensus of opinion amongst farmers nnd grnziers in the Manawatu is to tho effect, that such prolific growths of white clover have not been seen for about, twenty-five years.
