CUP WON BY UNCLE' NED. 'By Tolograph.-Special Correspondent. Auckland, January 29. , The Takaouna'Jockey Club's Summer Mectimr opened to-day in fine weather. There was a record attendance. The totalisator investments were ,£72,379 10s., as arainst ,£18,754 for tho corresponding dav last year.
After tho Hauraki Hurdles the stewards held an inquiry into tho causo of horses, fallinp; near the seven-furlong post, with the result that Dillimore, rider of Tetoa, was suspended for three months for careless riding. Fifteen horses faced tho starter in the Maiden Handicap. Awaraka and Hessian were tho best-backed. Tho former got awav badlv. and though he had passed the 'creator part of the field when half the distance- was travelled; he could not net even with the leaders. Marble Slab, who had been running confidently from the start, shot to tho front at the entrance to the straight, and won comfortably. The Zenkindia Handicap was fought out bv another big field, of which Te Oro was made a pronounced favourite. Ohinewairua shot to the front when tin tapes went up, and after thrco furlongs bad been traversed Rocklield ran into second rjlace. the rest of the field following.' After a can in the straight, Rockfield challenged tho leader, and going on stroiiKlv won by nearly a length with something in hand. Crowhurst, who seemed to Ret a. bad run, came with a rush at the last, and secured third place. The favourite ran disappointingly. Rathlin was tho best-backed for the Hauraki Hurdles. He and Te foa led for five furlongs, when Rath 111 fell, two others arso coming down. Tins gave le Toa a commanding lead,, but slowcoach, oamo at him in tho straight, and ran Eood second. . , , Of the seven horses who presented themselves at the barrier in tho Cup race Uncle Ned was favourite, Taiamai First Salute, nnd Tinopai also being well butmorted. Blue Cross was tho first to bcak the lino, with Tinopai and Taiamai Sow behind him. Uncle Ned lying handy.
