COSTLY LAWSUIT

SENSATIONAL ENDING. (Eec. January 25, 5.5 p.m.) London, January 23. There was a sensational ending to the big Manchester lawsuit, in which certain creditors of the Hare .Spinning Company sued Sir John Leigh, of John Leigh, Limited, and four ex-directors of tho 11 are Spinning Company, for damages for alleged conspiracy and fraud, in that the Hare, Company sold cotton waste to the Leigh Company below its value, and purchased cotton from the Leigh Company at above its value. Several King's counsel were engaged on both sides, and the retainers of the two leaders are said to be a record. Sir John Simon led the defence. Sir Edward Carson was originally retained for the plaintiffs, but returned the brief. Counsel's opening speech lasted for eight days, and the ease was expected to last for thirty days, at a cost of .£6 per minute. The principal witness for tho plaintill', who had been in Ihe box for three (lavs, udniited to-day that he gave false evidence yesterday. Counsel forthwith agreed to judgment for the defendants with full costs. Plaintiffs have been reuuired to furnish .£30.000 as security for costs, whereas the highest in any previous case was only .£lo,ooo.—Aus.NZ. Cable Assn.
