HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING,

A meeting of the Hutt County Council was held vesterday. There were present —Councillors F. Cooper (chairman), W. J. Howell, M. W. Welch, J. Whitman, W. Galloway, and P. Cavanagh. The report of the inspector of works showed that Hlverstiream 'bridge had been redecked with birch planking, 3532 feet of timber being used. The inspector considered that this would make the bridge fairly safe for eight or ten years. The ronort was adopted. Tho Statement of accounts to the end of December, 1919, showed that tho December expenditure totalled JCISGI is. Bd., of which JEBI2 ss. 4d. belonged to the general account. The'total expenditure amounted to .£10,052 13s. lid., of which ~£5039 7s. lOd. belonged. to the riding accounts. Tho bank account showed a debit of ,£5825 4s. lid. The ranger's report showed that fines totalling ,£3O 155., with .£22 7s. lid. costs, had been made during the year.^

After considerable discussion, it was resolved that tenders be called for drays for use in the county at so much per day. A deputation, consisting of Messrs. Mackny and Campbell, waited on the council with regard to White and Strands bridges, Akatarawa. Mr. Mac-, fcav said that hi* belonged to a new sawmilling firm, which had just opened a sawmill in the. district, and they wished the two bridges to bo repaired. The White bridge could only take loads not exceeding three tons in weight, but at the expense of about .£3O it could be made to take loads up to at least five tons. The Strands 'bridgo needed repairs to several of the planks. Councillor Whiteniaa said that the Government had granted a certain sum of money, subsidised by the council, towards the cost of building a new bridgo where the White bridge is at present, and this work would bo undertaken shortly.. A letter was read from the Agricultural Department, drawing the attention of the council tq the fact that the plant known as Latana Cumara had been declared a noxious weed.

Mr. K. C. Dick, of Upper Hutt. was appointed registrar of dogs and collector of taxes.

Tho Public Works Department wrote, asking if the council were prepared to pay dSllftO (the amount of their subsidy) toward« the improvements being carried out at Paekakariki Hill road, or, failing that, to have tho work stopped at once. The letter suggested that tho council .interview .the Minister of Public Works on tho subject. Councillor Howell, the inspector of works (Mr. Cudby), and the clerk were appointed to consult tho Minister.
