TROTTING

'MEETING OF NEW ZEALAND BOARD. By ToleEraph-Frcßß AnsooiatiM. Christchurch, January 14. At a meeting of the board of the New Zealand Trottinu Association the application of the Thames Trotting Club for registration was wanted. It was decided to ask the Forbury Park Club to make a full inquiry into the scratching of Gleaming at the recent suring meeting, and to report to the board. , The judicial Committee of the Otahnlm Club reported that it had reprimanded K. 11. Smith and W. Ke'.sey for au nrraußoraent' suggested during the running of the Campbell Handicap. Smith admitted that Kirikiriroa caught him.'and that Kelsey said, "I will save n. 'tenner' with you." Smith replied, "No chance, unless you slow up and make time slow." Kelsey did not do so, and Smith then said, "Do your best, the 'teniier' is off" ~ The matter was referred to the Licensing Committee, villi power to act.

.TOTES AND COMMENTS

(By 'Gibncob.} Acceptance!? for the Foxton Meeting close to-night at 9 o'clock. ' Trotting owners arc reminded raatacceptances for all events at the Wellington Trotting Club's Meeting close at noon to-morrow. Acceptances for the Pabiatua Meeting are (Hie on Tuealay next at 9 p.m. Entries for both the Hamilton and Taraniiki fixtures are due on Friday next. Several times lately had starts nave been made in wees owing to the faulty working of the harrier. On some occasions one side will not go up in unison with the other, and at other times tihe operation is very slow. As such a lot depend' upon the start of races, it behoves clubs to see that the starting gear is regularly overhauled. ' At a meeting of the committee of the Maunwatu Rao.in? Club, hold this week, a vote of condolence was accorded Mr. 11. Gillies in the loss of his son. who was killed in a motor accident, and votes of sympathy were parsed to Messrs. S. U. Lancaster arc! 13. Wood, both of whom ar« seriously ill, The well-known private racinjr track and nine-stall stable belonging to Mr. Ernest Short, and known as "Almodnle," will be offered at public auction on January 23. Further particulars are advertised in this issue. I Motorists who are in the habit of attending the Awapuni .race? will-be glad to know that a sub-committee has been appointed to draw up~a scheme for improved -road accommodation to obviate tho congestion that takes place at the entrance to the course, and to carry out further necessary and urgent improvements if possible before the autumn meeting. Entries for hhe antumn meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club are due on Friday. ' Humbug did not do too well on tho EUerslie trip, so .T. n. Jeffevd has decided to spell the Absurd colt for a short term. The Ngatarawa team for the Wellington Meeting will consist of Vagabond and Tigritiya, and a couple of two-year-olds. At Trentham yesterday there was very little- fa«-t work done. .T. Jnnviasonsiniloped Affectation and Hose Wreath over half a mile on Hie tan, and 11. Cutis gave Nightraider and Royal Stag a similar task on the same track. Tho acceptances- for the first day's handicaps at the Wellington Meeting are highly satisfactory, and all the horses that could be expected have been naid up for in the Cup and Telegraph Handicap. Interest in the meeting* is now Winning to quicken, and there will be a big gathering to witness the windingI up «allops on Saturday, j "Sir Modrcd," in the - "Southland I Times." says:—"The Southland Racing I Club last week inaugurated the idea of rnnnine the principal sprint event each I day prior to the most imnortant lonir I distance handicap of the afternoon, and the -innovation appeared to bo successful. I as good fields were secured on each oeca- ,! sion. Nine starters contested the FlyI ing Handicap on the onenine; day, and the field for the Shorts Handicat) on tho ■ concluding day, numbered eight, two I withdrawals eompctine in other event", one of these being Radial, who subsequently scored in the Southland Handicap. Owing to the small field taking part in tho Invcrcargill Cup the first day's comparison is not so valuable as it would otherwiso have been, but tho figures are interesting. Of the fourteen accepted for in the Flying Handicap, • Amythas was withdrawn to win tho Invcrcargill Clip, Koesian and Redshire . did not start at tho meeting, and Marjery and Palamon ran in other races during the afternoon. Taking nil the circumstances into consideration, the experiment may be classed as an encouraging one, and there is ovcrv reason why it should ba persevered with." The acceptance of Spanner for the Telegraph Handicap at Trentham will lend interest to that event, as it means that the bay son of The Nut lias thrown off the soreness which affected 'him in Sydney. If he is at his best ou Tues- " day, ho will make things very merry for Arrowsmith and Co. > The suggestion made by a member of the Manawatn Racing Club that a track inside tho racing track should be formed and an electric motor supplied for a stipendiary steward to follow the race in, will not surely be considered seriously by the committee, for it is quite impracticable. If a motor wcro to chase tho field round the track it would probably frighten all the horses off the track, and a serious accident would ensue, while if the car was kept behind the field the stipendiary could not see tho race as well as wore he in an elevat,ed position elsewhere. R. Emerson had intended* bringing Moorabbo and Fabrinade to race at .Wellington, but Moorabbe's owner entered her in hack races, for which she is not eligible, as her last win at Riecarton put her out of hack company. As Fabrinade, i hough showing considerable promise, is not very forward, Emerson abandoned the trip. Owners are given a reminder that entries for the Canterbury Jockey Club's Summer Meeting close on Friday evening. At the samo time, first forfeits for the Middle Park Plato fall due.
