SITUATION IN SYRIA
SERIOUS FIGHTING REPORTED ■ FRENCH TROOPS SUFFER SEVERELY (Kec. January 15, 1.5 a.m.) Cairo, January 12. The latest news from' Syria shows that the situation is exceedingly grave. Thero has been serious fighting between the French and Syrian volunteers at Margyun, where tho casualties on both sides were heavy; also at Tallkalakh, where the French troops are reported to havo suffered severely. There has also been fighting at Alexandrotta and other places along the line of demarcation of the French zone. A National Defence Committee has been formed at Damascus for enforcing compulsory military service on everybody. The committee has issued a manifesto against all foreign intervention.
