NEW TRAINING SHIP
TO REPLACE AMOKURA. For more than two years now the Government, training-ship Amokura has not been to tea. 60 that tho training that the bovs have had to fit them for a seaEoincr life has been of necessity given to them on shore, or on board tho vessel anchored in tho Kaiwarra Bight. The ship did co to sea, once upon a time with the' bovs, but for some two years , it. has not been considered that the ves- > sel is seaworthy. The Government and tho bovs themselves have badly wanted a now ship for a long time, and on the Inst onrasiou when ho was in England Mr. Massev arranged with the Admiralty to let New Zealand have a suitable traininc ship. Captain Hooper, of tho Amokura, went Home to make n selection of the vessels offered bv,the Admiralty, and to bring the ship out He ha 3 selected H.M.S. Sapphire, a vessel ■ launched in 1901. She is a protected cruiser of 3000 tons, 360 feet in length, -10ft. beam, lljft. draught,, and 10,200 indicated, horsepower. Tho ship's original 6peed was , 22V knots, but as a speed of 14 knots will be amnio' for her purposes as trainingship, the indicated horse-power will be reduced by the lemoval of'some of the boilers. Some other alterations will ' have to be made in the ship to fit her for her new purposes. - The Sapphire will probably not bo in New Zealand waters for three months vet.
